The Donor Branch of FCLV

Comprehensive egg donor medical screening

Prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor eggs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires extensive egg donor medical screening to rule out certain risk factors. The goal of our comprehensive screening process is to eliminate the risk of transmitting a communicable or genetic disease from the egg donor to the recipient or the child, while ensuring that the egg donor is healthy and capable of producing a good number of eggs during her IVF cycle.

FDA-compliant egg donor medical screening

Our extensive egg donor medical screening process begins at the donor’s initial visit, once she has completed her online application for Las Vegas egg donation. Before this appointment, the donor is asked to complete a lengthy medical, family and personal history that reveals any inheritable genetic diseases and lifestyle factors that could affect fertility. Our fertility specialists will review all of this information, along with medical records and blood test results.

Our thorough egg donor medical screening process will include:

  • A brief physical exam, similar to an annual exam by a gynecologist
  • Ultrasound examination of the ovaries and reproductive organs
  • Orders for blood tests to check for genetic and communicable diseases and drug use
  • A psychological evaluation with a licensed mental health professional

The FDA requires testing for:

  • HIV, types 1 and 2
  • Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)
  • Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)
  • Treponema pallidum (syphilis)
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Neisseria gonorrhea
  • West nile virus

In addition to reassuring the fertility specialist that the egg donor is disease-free and her reproductive organs are functioning normally, the egg donor medical screening gives potential recipients confidence that the donor cycle meets the stringent safety standards applied to all human tissue donations. At the same time, the egg donor receives valuable information about her own health and fertility, at no cost to her.

Verifying eligibility

Once the donor has completed the initial screening process, her profile is added to our online database of eligible egg donors, where it can be viewed by hopeful parents-to-be seeking an egg donor to help them grow their families.
